  • This is a significant building

The Spiegelhalter family moved from Germany to live in London’s east end and started to run their business in 1828. It was first established at The Mount in Whitechapel. It sold mostly clocks and watches. In particular, they had a specialism in hand painted clocks with either hearts and flowers or home sweet home. The business was then later moved to 81 Mile End Road in around 1880. This is where the trade branched out into also making jewelry. The cause of number 81’s closure in 1988 was due to the rise in prices and the recession.
