The Black Horse has an interesting history and architecture. Like the Hayfield Tavern, (4 doors down), it was originally owned by the Charrington Brewery across the road until it was sold off in 2002.  It then became a night club and gay bar.  It retains its original pub façade dating back to early 19th century and inside it has a tiled mural with an image of a black horse. In the 70’s it was given a Wild West makeover by the owner, a former docker, Lenny and and his wife Pat Edwards. The building is set to reopen in Summer 2012 and is having a Joe Strummer tribute night in August.
