The Royal London Hsoptial has played a major role in the history of the East End, and today has one of th Europe's largest A&E departments and one of Britain's largest children's hospitals. A number of significant people are connected to the hospital including Edith Cavell who trained to be a nurse here, and Joseph Merrick (the 'Elephant Man') who lived here between 1886 and 1890.
