The aim of the New People’s Palace was to promote ‘health and happiness’ in the East End by providing the public with social and leisure activities, therefore extending the aims of the original People's Palace. This was achieved through the inclusion of a cinema hall, recreation hall and restaurant. The building was opened by the newly acceded George VI in 1937.
