Stepney Green Station

Significant Building

  • Completed: 1904
  • Built by: Harry W Ford
  • Historic period: Edwardian: 1901-1914
  • This is a significant building
  • Current Use: Transport

This is an excellent example of an early twentieth century railways station. Its sister station at Bow road has been the subject of a preservation order, highlighting the significance of such buildings. It is rare to find a London railway station which remains so close to its original likeness. On the platform level one can also find some original signage. ‘The engineer who designed and constructed the new railway was Cuthbert A.Brereton, whose novel idea for an opening ceremony was a party for a thousand children at the nearby Peoples’ Palace.’ Stepney, Bethnal Green and Poplar in old photographs
