Listed as a fine example of a Passmore Edwards library.  The building is decorated with rich Renaissance-style terracotta ornament, and has a close historic link with the adjacent  Whitechapel Art Gallery.  Both buildings shared benefactors Canon Barnett and Passmore Edwards, as well as the purpose of providing cultural and education resources for the people of late-Victorian east London.
