Significant Building

  • Completed: 1928
  • Built by: Whinney, Son and Austen Hall.
  • Historic period: Inter-war: 1919-1939
  • This is a significant building
  • Current Use: Place of Worship

This building demonstrates the way that buildings can change and be adapted for different functions. It was originally a bank between 1928 and 1987, and closed in 1987 after repeated bank robberies, 'being raided five times in eight months' (Sunday Express, 12th March 1987). From 2000 it became the Al-Huda Mosque, which serves the Somali Muslim community. The building will be added to by Makespace architects in the future.
